The story is about Jon: an engineer rapidly approaching 60. Seeking a final fling before it is too late, he has a one night stand with a much younger woman but is then blackmailed by her pimp. Jon discovers that his wife has had multiple sexual encounters. Against his nature, he attacks his wife and also a woman friend who tries to help him. As his character subsides, he resolves to kill the pimp, initially to get rid of the problem but eventually because he wants to do it. Jon joins a gun club and is introduced to black powder handguns by Pete. Jon is able to buy two shotguns, a rifle and black powder handgun from Eric: the wastrel son of a former club member. Jon meets the former wife of a policeman on the internet and she gives him advice. Jon regards her as his guardian angel. As part of his plan, Jon needs to get £10,000 in small denomination notes, under which he intends to hide the handgun. When he goes to the bank he is caught up in a robbery in which he is nearly shot and is hit on the head. He gets the money but also unwelcome media attention. Jon kills the pimp, his driver, his muscle and the prostitute in a gun battle in Wormwood Lane: hence the book’s title. Jon now has the problem of Pete and Eric. Pete tells him that one of shotguns is half of a valuable matched pair and that Erics uncle has the other and wants Jons back. Jon agrees to sell the gun back to Eric and to share the profit with Pete, but Pete then forces him to fight a duel with the winner keeping the gun. Pete is killed. Jon then completes the cleanup of loose ends by killing Eric. The police identify Jon as the main suspect and he retreats to his guardian angel. She helps him to destroy the guns and other evidence and they start a relationship.
